The Garden of Eden. Where it all began. The First Marriage.
There is a lot to unpack there. But let’s stick to why we now have to pray over our marriages to get the victory over the enemy who is hell bent on destroying our families.
It all started when that snake (in the grass) convinced Eve to eat that fruit and she influenced Adam to eat and the war has been on ever since.
Now whether you want to call this war the Crazy Cycle (readers of Love and Respect by Dr. Eggleston knows what I am talking about), or whatever you want to call it (the devil), when you understand the source of the problem, you can work on the solution.
Your spouse is not your problem. I know that some may be able to think of at least 10 reasons why they are the problem. But at the root of the issues in our marriages is our flesh and demonic forces (as a result of The Fall) seeking to control us and our spouses.
Therefore, the answer is what it always is and always will be. Seeking the scriptures for the truth that makes us free!
When we pray God’s word over us marriages, it will cause us to:
- Pray for and with our spouses which leads to greater harmony
- Gain perspective about how our spouses feel
- Honor our respective roles as they are outlined in the Word of God
I am convinced that without the Spirit of God powering the Word of God, I could not see my way to accomplishing what the Lord asks of me in marriage. I mean really, it calls for a constant dying to self which is a good thing because you grow in spiritual maturity, and that lead to freedom!
12 Scriptures to Pray Over Your Marriage
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.Isaiah 51:10
31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.Ephesians 4:31-32
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.Ephesians 5:1-2
Every marriage goes through desert seasons because at the end of the day, God wants us to look to Him to meet our deepest needs and desires. When we put that pressure on human beings, they don’t generally respond too well.
So give your spouse the grace that they need to become the person that they deeply desire to become in the Lord. And you can help them, yourself and your marriage by quoting these scriptures over your marriage.
Grace and Peace,
